  • I am a current student at Aranami Dojo, we learn different techniques, katas, and we learn how to spar as well. All these things build your endurance, teaches you self-defense as well as traditional dojo etiquette. Ryan sensei is a very good teacher who is patient, understanding and knowledgable. The karate moves that we learn are taught in Japanese, so it is a perfect fit for those who want to learn the language. It is definitely worth it to study karate here under Ryan sensei, whether it is for self-defense or to broaden your horizon.

  • Here you can study with a teacher who loves and diligently follows budo! At the recommendation of a friend, I began bringing my son and daughter to class here. Ryan is kind in his instruction to each and every student, teaching in a harmonious environment with the occasional addition of humor. With my kids living abroad, I had given up hope that they would learn traditional budo, so I was overjoyed to provide them this opportunity. Here you can find a warm dojo with the teacher’s character! If you are going to study karate in Hawai’i, I definitely recommend!

  • My two boys love training with Ryan-sensei! He’s fluent in both Japanese and English, which is perfect for my bilingual children. He’s great with kids, balancing discipline and encouragement through this traditional practice. The class follows Kyokushin-style karate, so there’s real striking involved, making it a great way for kids to build strength and confidence. It’s a very popular class—so I almost don’t want to recommend it too much, or we might lose our spot! But truly, it’s a fantastic experience with a great teacher and great energy.

  • My sister and I have done martial arts our entire lives. Shotokan Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Eskrima, Muay Thai, etc. as well as a bunch of others. However Kyokushin Karate was a style we were always intrigued by and passionate about learning and diving into. We held it high regard, had a lot of respect for it, and were looking for a school here on O’ahu for years. When we found Aranami Dojo it was everything we thought it was and was hoping for. Sensei Ryan, the atmosphere he created, the community, the training methods, the culture, is all high quality and everything exceeded our expectations. It’s a place where any and everyone can learn and have fun regardless of experience level while being surrounded by a good and positive community. As a life long martial artist I always look forward to class and always leave in a great mood. Osu!

The community is warm and welcoming, and Sensei Ryan is a fantastic instructor who explains techniques in a way that’s easy to understand, takes the time to make sure everyone gets it, and is just an all-around great sensei. We’re excited to be part of this journey and look forward to what’s ahead for Aranami Dojo.

  • My son is a student with Aranami Dojo in town and he instantly knew, during his trial class, that he was going to love attending this school. He loves that he trains with adults as well as the other kids. All the students in this school have a strong respect for one another, along with a tight bond with Sensei Ryan. He made my son feel so welcome on his first day. London gets so excited everything day that he has another class. My son feels very secure in this school and knows that the lessons he’s learning here, apply to much more than just karate. Sensei Ryan brings a strength in his classes as well as a very deep respect for this martial art. One he passes down to all of his students.

  • I recently moved to Honolulu and was looking to begin training in kyokushin karate I reached out to Sensei Ryan and he was quick with his reply and answered my questions promptly and professionally. After watching a class I knew the club was for me, a well run friendly and respectful environment. Sensei Ryan manages to make a tough training style seem fun and informative. I manage to smile after a hour of sweating and sparring. I was made to feel welcome and included from class one and enjoy every lesson. There is a good mix of students and ages so is a perfect place to train regardless of ability, age or gender. I look forward to training more and learning what Sensei Ryan can teach me and would encourage anyone with an interest to have a go.

  • Since joining Aranami Kyokushin Dojo in September, I’ve been absolutely blown away by the experience! As someone who moved to Oahu a couple of years ago, I was searching for a place to channel my energy and grow, and this dojo has been a perfect fit. Sensei Ryan Layman, the owner and lead instructor, is nothing short of phenomenal. Trained by some of the best Kyokushin Karate instructors in the world, he brings an unmatched authenticity and passion to every class, with excellent technique and a deep commitment to budo—the traditional martial arts way. Sensei Ryan’s teaching is a game-changer—whether you’re a newbie like I was or a seasoned martial artist, he tailors his approach to meet you where you are. Fluent in both Japanese and English, he patiently breaks down techniques in Japanese, from kihon to katas like Taikyoku Sono San, making learning accessible and culturally immersive. His high-energy kumite sessions push you to dig deep while fostering a harmonious, family-like atmosphere with just the right touch of humor. The dojo, nestled in the vibrant Makiki and Mo’ili’ili areas of Honolulu, lives up to its name, Aranami (“rough waves”), with training that’s intense yet transformative, building endurance, self-defense skills, and traditional etiquette for all ages and levels. What I love most is the sense of community—everyone supports each other like family, creating an inspiring, welcoming vibe. As a fan of discipline and cultural depth, I’m hooked on how Sensei Ryan weaves Kyokushin’s philosophy into every session, helping me build strength, confidence, and resilience. If you’re in Honolulu and want to embark on a martial arts journey that’s as rewarding as it is challenging, Aranami Kyokushin Dojo is the place to be. Osu! Highly recommend!
