Pinan Sono Ichi

Pinan Sono Ichi is the first of five kata in the Pinan series. Pinan is the Okinawan name for the kata in this series. In other styles of karate this kata is named Heian instead, and you will often find the first and second kata switched in order as well.

Pinan Sono Ichi is the first kata in the Kyokushin series that introduces the following two elements:

  • On the third count, two moves are executed instead of one.

  • Unlike prior kata, it is not entirely symmetrical. This is related to the previous point, but also the moves going back down the enbusen are different (joudan-age-uke coming down, seiken chudan tsuki going back)
